Carolina is the setting for this family drama which has a young tomboy (Jennifer Jones) falling for a local gentleman (Charlton Heston). Their relationship is as tempestuous as her lifestyle, which eventually takes her off to the seas as the captain of a ship.

GOOD ACTING
I BOUGHT THIS DVD OF THE FILM, ESPECIALLY FOR JENNIFER JONES, BUT GOT AN EXTRA SUPPRISE. NAMELY WITH BURT LANCASTER'S PERFORMANCE!!!WITH JENNIFER YOU GET A MORE EARTHY ROLE. IN "LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING " I CAN APPRECIATE IT'S SICKLY ATMOSPHERE. ALSO WITH "THE SONG OF BERNADET." BURT GIVES A DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE. HE BRINGS OUT HIS MASCULINITY. A FINE FILM.

Nice old movie.

A bit of a pot-boiler, but tasty enough.
It took me a little while to work out the relationship between Ruby and two or three of the other main characters, so that detracted a bit from my enjoyment of the film until these things became clear.Otherwise, this was a good melodrama, with plenty of 1950s small-town atmosphere, and a plot which moved along at pace, with the eventual outcome never clear, and, indeed, proving to be a surprise.
